Gift Card Fraud

A common fraud activity involves a fraudster purchasing a gift card or e-gift card with a stolen payment card, then buying goods or services or selling the gift card or the card code. Gift cards can be challenging for merchants as customers expect near instant fulfillment and no shipping address is needed for e-gift cards. Three fraud management approaches are discussed, along with how to assess, plan, and execute a strategy.
